There is an almost universal misconception that the viol is a much earlier instrument than the violin and that somehow the entire violin family developed from it. The status, technique, repertoire and construction of the viol is quite different to the violin. The wood is thinner throughout and the strings are lighter, longer and have less tension. Possibly developing in Spain around the mid 1400's the outward appearance of the viol has varied enormously throughout its history and only emerged in its present form around 1600. Our finished Treble Viol is based on an instrument by Henry Jaye in a private collection and is a 'small' treble measuring only xmm overall length with a vibrating string length of xmm. Each instrument is hand built to special order in our own workshops in Bradford and comes with 12 months warranty. A soft padded bag or fitted hard case and a choice of bows are available as optional extras if required.
